Tech Tuesday #6 – Individual Cell Fusing

In the sixth installment of our Tech Tuesday Series we take a bitesized look at what goes into the technology behind our battery technology, starting with the first of our safety features at the module level.

Module Safety – Individual Cell Fusing

Thanks to the wirebonding technique, each of the cells used in our Hibernium® battery packs is individually fused, providing cell level short circuit protection.

In a battery pack, individual cells are typically connected in series and parallel to increase the pack’s overall capacity and voltage. Cell fusing is a safety measure that involves adding a fuse in the electrical path between each cell in the pack. If the current through a cell becomes too high, the fuse will blow, interrupting the electrical circuit and preventing the cell from overheating or catching fire. This protects the battery pack and the device it powers in the event of a malfunction or abuse.

As we shift towards an all-electric future, it is battery safety technology like this that is making electrification a reality, not just for the mass vehicle market, but for more diverse marketings such as mining, construction, aviation and agriculture too.
