In the eighteenth instalment of our Tech Tuesday Series, we take a bite-sized look at what goes into the technology behind our battery tech, with the eighth of our safety features at the pack level.
Pack Safety – Manual Service Disconnect
The Manual Service Disconnect (MSD) in our Hibernium® battery packs, serves as a battery cut-off, as it disconnects the battery from the vehicle’s electrical system. It’s a key function, especially when the vehicle is undergoing maintenance of any kind, as it removes any residual energy loads from the battery.
This can also be useful in the case of an accident, as exposed wires and fluids could cause a thermal event, so disengaging the MSD in such cases could prevent a fire from developing.
When opened, the manual service disconnect presents a safe disconnect for the high voltage battery packs without the need for specialist tools, while the in-built fuse protects the battery from short circuits.
As we shift towards an all-electric future, it is battery safety technology like this that is making electrification a reality, not just for the mass vehicle market, but for more diverse marketings such as mining, construction, aviation and agriculture too.
